Methods to Improve Irrigation Efficiency: Practical Tips from Pump Use to Field Management

To maximize the value of every drop of water, it's crucial to address every step from pumping to irrigation. First, manage the "heart" of the water source—the water pump. Regularly check the connections between the pump and pipes for tightness to prevent leaks at the source. Adjust the pump according to the actual height and area of the field, avoiding prolonged overloading or excessive force. This saves on electricity and fuel costs and makes the machine more durable.

Water is most prone to insidious loss during transport. Old earthen ditches often leak severely; where possible, gradually replace them with cement ditches or directly bury impermeable pipes to deliver water more directly to the fields. For pipes, pay close attention to valves, joints, and hoses, replacing any aging or damaged parts promptly. Even a small leak can result in a surprisingly large amount of wasted water throughout the irrigation season.

The choice of irrigation method has a significant impact. Traditional flood irrigation not only uses excessive water but also easily leads to waterlogged areas and inadequate irrigation in others. If conditions permit, drip irrigation or sprinkler irrigation is a highly efficient option. Like precise rain, it directly nourishes the crop roots, greatly reducing evaporation and runoff. If furrow or flood irrigation is still used, taking the time to level the land and prepare the ditches beforehand will ensure more even water distribution.

Ultimately, efficiency depends on human judgment. Change the habit of watering on fixed dates and learn to observe: feel the moisture deep in the soil with your hand and check if the crop leaves are starting to wilt. Pay close attention to the weather forecast and suspend irrigation before rainfall is predicted. Try to water in the cool morning or evening, avoiding the midday sun. Through careful planning, irrigation can be just right, meeting crop growth needs while avoiding unnecessary waste.
