Water Pump Troubleshooting and Repair: Common Problems and Solutions
When a water pump malfunctions, you can first try to diagnose the problem by observing symptoms such as "no water coming out," "low water flow," or "abnormal noise and vibration." If the pump fails to draw water after starting, the most common cause is air in the inlet or pipes. In this case, check if the suction pipe is sealed tightly and purge the pump with water to remove air. Also, check if the foot valve or filter is clogged with debris, and whether the pump is rotating in the correct direction.
If the pump outputs water but the flow rate is significantly insufficient or the pressure is low, this usually indicates blockage or wear somewhere. First, check the filter and pipes, especially elbows, for blockages. Additionally, severe blockage of the impeller or internal flow channels of the pump casing by silt or scale can also reduce water flow. For pumps that have been used for a long time, wear on the impeller or sealing rings can cause internal leaks and reduce efficiency, requiring repair or replacement of worn parts.
Abnormal noise or severe vibration during pump operation is often a sign of mechanical failure. First, stop the pump and check if the foundation bolts are loose to ensure the pump is securely installed. Second, check if the pump shaft and motor shaft are aligned and if the coupling is damaged. If the noise is coming from inside the pump, it may be due to worn bearings, a loose impeller, or foreign objects inside. For these types of internal mechanical problems, it is recommended that a professional technician disassemble and inspect them to avoid further damage. Always disconnect the power supply before performing any maintenance to ensure safety.
