Basic Maintenance Points for Irrigation Pumps

Maintaining good operation of the irrigation pump hinges on developing the habit of performing simple checks before and after each use. Before starting, spend a minute or two checking that all connections to the pump and piping are tight and free of obvious leaks; check that the inlet filter is clean to prevent debris from entering the pump body; and confirm that the foot valve (if present) opens and closes normally. For diesel or gasoline engine pumps, also check that the engine oil and fuel levels are sufficient. After starting, run the pump briefly to listen for a steady sound and observe whether the pressure or water flow is normal. These basic checks can prevent most sudden malfunctions.

During daily operation, proper operation and timely cleaning are the best maintenance. Avoid running the pump at excessively high head or low flow rates for extended periods, as this will accelerate wear and overheating. After each shutdown, if pumping turbid water, it is best to briefly run the pump with clean water to flush out any accumulated sediment. Regularly wipe away dust and mud from the pump body surface, ensure good heat dissipation for the motor or engine, and check the belt tension (if there is a belt drive).

In addition, establish regular, periodic deep maintenance. Depending on usage frequency, perform more comprehensive maintenance every one to two months or at the end of an irrigation season: check and tighten all screws; add or replace appropriate grease on bearings and other parts requiring lubrication; check impellers, seals, and other vulnerable parts for significant wear or excessive clearance. For pumps used seasonally, be sure to drain any water from the pump and piping before long-term storage to prevent freezing, cracking, or corrosion, and store them in a dry, well-ventilated place. Simply keeping a record of the date and content of each maintenance will help you track the pump's condition and ensure its reliable operation year after year.
