How to Use Sprinkler Guns Properly

How to Use Sprinkler Guns Properly

Proper use of sprinkler guns (usually long-range, high-flow swing-arm guns) can significantly improve irrigation efficiency and uniformity. The following are key operating points:

1. Preparation and Arrangement Before Use

Checking the Operating Pressure:

Check the rated operating pressure on your sprinkler gun's nameplate (usually in MPa or bar).

Ensure your pump provides pressure within this range. Low pressure results in short range and uneven spraying; high pressure wastes water, increases wear, and can even damage the sprinkler gun.

Properly Install Branch Pipes and Connectors:

Use a sturdy bracket or trolley to secure the water supply branch pipe. Ensure the sprinkler gun is stable after connection and prevents it from tipping or wobbling under the reaction force.

Use quick-connect connectors at the connection point, and ensure the seals are intact to prevent leaks.

Planning the Placement:

Plan placement based on the sprinkler gun's range. Ensure that the spraying ranges of two adjacent sprinklers overlap by at least 10%-20%. This is crucial for uniform irrigation and eliminating dead spots.

Consider wind direction when placing the sprinklers. The spray range increases with a tailwind and decreases with a headwind. Therefore, the distance between the spray guns should be adjusted appropriately.

2. Starting, Adjusting, and Operating

Smooth Starting:

Partially open the valve at the end of the branch pipe.

Start the pump. After the air in the pipe has been exhausted and the pressure has stabilized, slowly open the valve to its maximum. Suddenly opening the valve fully will cause water hammer, impacting the spray gun.

Adjusting the Spray Range:

Fan Spray: Most spray guns have a reversing mechanism (a shift pin or lever) on the nozzle. Inserting this mechanism into different holes limits the nozzle's rotation angle, allowing adjustment from 90°, 180°, 270°, to a full 360° circle. This can be used to irrigate corners and edges of a plot to avoid wasting water.

Adjusting the Spray Range: Some spray guns have a flow restriction ring or pressure adjustment screw at the front of the nozzle. Turning this screw allows for fine-tuning the water outlet diameter, thereby controlling the spray range and water volume within a certain range. Note: Larger adjustments to flow and pressure should be made through the valve and pump. Monitor the operating status:

Listen to the sound: During operation, you should hear a uniform hissing sound of water spraying and a rhythmic tapping sound from the rocker arm. If there is any violent vibration or banging, stop the machine immediately for inspection.

Observe the rotation: Observe whether the nozzle rotates evenly and continuously. If the rocker arm swings weakly or stops rotating, it may be due to insufficient pressure, an overtightened rocker spring, or debris in the rotating parts.

Observe the raindrops: Observe whether the water droplets in the air are small and uniform. If a thick column of water appears, the nozzle may be clogged by debris.

III. Shutdown and Maintenance

Proper Shutdown: First, slowly close the valve on the branch pipe.

Then stop the water pump. This effectively protects the spray gun and piping system from water hammer.

Daily Maintenance:

After each use: Shut off the water supply, remove the spray gun, and empty any debris.

Cleaning the nozzle: Use a cork pick or toothbrush to clean the nozzle hole. Never use a metal needle to avoid scratching the inner wall.

Regular Lubrication: Lubricate the rotating bearing regularly according to the instructions. After the season ends: Clean the spray gun thoroughly, dry it, and store it in a cool, dark place.

Key Points

Pressure Matching: Ensure the pump pressure is within the rated range of the spray gun.

Place the spray gun strategically: Plan the spray gun according to range and wind direction to ensure overlapping spray patterns.

Start Smoothly: Open the valve slowly to prevent water hammer.

Adjust Adjustments: Utilize the fan spray function to irrigate corners and corners to conserve water.

Maintain Carefully: Clean the nozzle regularly and lubricate it regularly.
