Winter is coming! Here's how to clean your water pump and spray gun for smooth service next year!
Introduction: As the weather cools and you're done with your farm work, don't just toss your water pump and spray gun in the corner and forget about them! Take just a few minutes and follow the steps below to give them a "year-end maintenance." This will not only prevent you from being unable to use them come spring, but will also ensure your essential tools last for years to come!
Step 1: Thoroughly "Drain" - The Key to Preventing Frost Cracking
Residual water is the biggest enemy of water pumps and spray guns in winter. Once frozen, its volume expands and can cause cracks in the pump, pipes, and spray gun.
Draining the Water Pump:
Turn off the power! Safety first.
Locate the drain screw at the bottom of the pump (usually at the lowest point) and unscrew it with a small wrench or pliers.
Also, open the water inlet or vent on top of the pump to allow air in, helping any remaining water drain out more quickly and thoroughly.
When water stops dripping, remember to replace the screw to prevent it from getting lost. Drain the pipes and spray gun:
Remove the water pipe from the pump and take it to higher ground. Hold one end and drag it from end to end for several meters, allowing gravity to drain most of the water.
Remove the spray gun as well. Manually move the rocker arm and reversing lever several times to release the water from the internal orifices.
Step 2: Thoroughly "clean" to prevent clogging and rust. Dirt and debris can corrode the equipment and clog the delicate nozzles when dried.
Rinse the exterior: Use clean water to flush away mud and weeds from the pump, pipes, and spray gun.
Clean the "throat" and "mouth": In particular, inspect the filter at the pump inlet and the spray gun nozzle. Use your fingers or a soft-bristled brush to remove any debris and ensure the orifices are clear.
Step 3: Proper "storage" to prevent aging and damage. Careless disposal can cause plastic parts to deteriorate and rubber rings to deform.
Drying: Use an old towel or cloth to dry all components inside and out. "Return Home": Drain, clean, and dry the pump, hoses, and spray guns, and store them indoors in a dry, well-ventilated area (such as a tool shed or warehouse) away from sunlight and rain. It's best to cover them with a cloth to protect them from dust.
In summary, there are three tips for winter maintenance:
"Drain, clean, and return."
A special reminder:
If you're using a submersible pump, strictly follow the above steps to clean, drain, and dry it after extracting it from the well or water. Prolonged periods of unused use will significantly shorten its lifespan!
Get started now! Give your irrigation equipment a warm "hibernation," and it'll be back to serving you full strength next spring!
